Minnesota Lawmaker Wants Fragrance Awareness Program in Schools

Continuing with the offbeat state legislative news, there is word from the Huffington Post today about a Minnesota lawmaker who proposed a bill Monday urging an educational campaign to deter students from soaking themselves in certain fragrances that irritate classmates with asthma and other health conditions.

At first, Rep. Karen Clark, a Democrat, wanted to ban fragrances in Minneapolis schools, but the bill she introduced Monday just mandates an awareness program in Minneapolis schools and in other districts that volunteer. The campaign could involve letters to parents, Web sites, signs in schools, e-mail and fact sheets.

Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the only other states where lawmakers have attempted to enact scent-free legislation in the past two years.
